Hlemoutsi Castle.
Hlemoutsi Castle, in French Clermont was
built by Geoffrey of Villehardouin
(Prince of Achaia) to protect his
kingdom in the western part of
Peloponnese.

The Italian name Tornese makes
reference to the Tournois a
coin minted in the castle and similar
to the coinage of Tours in France. The
castle is located on the summit of a
hill close to Killini port and it faces
the islands of Zante and Cefalonia .
Hlemoutsi was under Venetian control
for a short period and the Venetians
did not make any changes to it. The external
walls were added by the Turks, who built
a mosque (lost) and other facilities
in the area between the castle and the
external walls. In 1825 it was bombarded
by Ibrahim Pacha, as it had been seized
by the Greeks during the war which eventually
led to the independence of Greece
